It started out OK, even if our "supervisors" were being more than a little patronising. Everyone was in high spirits after a noisy coach ride to 5th station at 2,300meters above sea level. It was the same crowd that attended the welcome party so we were all fairly familiar with each other.
MT. Fuji is not known for the difficulty of its climbing conditions and the going was exceptionally easy. There is a well trodden path leading up the mountain with a small amount of climbing at a 70 degree angle. However what was meant to be a 3hour stroll turned into a 6 hour trudge due to the mass crowds and then further up the mountain extreme weather.
To start with it was more like queuing for some sort of attraction, people were just shuffling along, luckily at 2,600 you are high enough to appreciate some good views when there are breaks in the clouds below. As everyone ascended, the crowds gradually dispersed making their way into the various 'mountain huts' that adorn the mountain. We were also bound for such a hut but ours was only 200 meters from the top. Our plan was to awake at 3am and climb up with the sunrise to the summit.... at least that was the plan.
Unfortunately that is all we have time for today but stay tuned because the epic tale of MT. Fuji will (hopefully) be concluded tomorrow. Sorry to leave it on such a 'cliffhanger' but I have run out of time after going to one of the strangest festivals yet. There seems to be some kind of festival almost every 2 weeks. This one was a of song and dance affair with absolute Z(ZZZ) list celebrities and far too many over the top Japanese drag queens... Thankfully there are no pictures!!!
See you tomorrow!!!
