I believe I have been accosted by some sort of Internet angel (much like the car park angels that find you a parking space when you most need it). I knew the internet would be fairly scarce in rural Japan, but i trusted my luck that I would find an internet cafe or maybe even befriend someone with a connection. Imagine my surprise then, when I find that there are not 1 but 2 unknown, unsecure wireless connections hovering right arond my room. I approached Mr Sakaki about this in the hopes of maybe paying whoever it is that owns the connection. Imagine my surprise when Mr Sakaki tells me there is no such thing as a wireless connection in the Gunma area and all the internet comes through the phone lines! The next day Mr Sakaki drags me to his "computer expert" friend who doesn't believe I can get a connection. We prove to him that it can and on the drive home Mr Sakaki talks about how it could be ileagal and that it shouldn't be allowed to happen. Then he turns to me and with a gleam in his eye says "... but if it works I will buy one!" nodding to the laptop in my hand... Imagine my surprise!!
Also on the trip to computer experts house we stopped off to meet Mr Sakaki's "english teacher" friend at his class. I was dragged up to the front of class like some dirty piece of meat whilst Japanese 8year olds bombarded me with questions like: "what is your favourate animal?" and "Do you like anime?" and "what is your least favourate food?" It was diabolical!!! Imagine My surprise when the somewhat camp english teacher asked me to "come back as often as possible" shaking my hand with both of his!!!
With regards to some of the more prominant (or should that be pertinant) questions in the comments area:
- No the house isn't made of paper but one of my walls is, which is a bit disconcerting.
- No my beard hasn't offended anyone (because I shaved it off before it offended anyone).
- and Yes it is incredibly exhilerating to secretly be a Geisha girl (and the tips aren't bad either).
Right all done
Goodnight
Ps Slightly belated Singapore airport pic. plants are real. more coming soon...

Great to hear you are having so much fun Matthew, but when does the work begin!!! I would have loved to have been there to see you with the chopsticks - that really appealed to my sense of humour. Missing you and take care x
