Part1
I have been in Japan for exactly 24 hours and I already have a million things I could write about from the sheer vastness of Tokyo (it took us an hour and a half to drive around it … on the express way!!!) to the amazing cherry blossoms found scattered in every nook and cranny of Japan adding a real other worldly beauty.
However first I shall talk about my situation here:
After being greeted by Mr Sakaki at the airport we had to wait around for Astrid Pederson, another trainee hailing from Denmark. During this time I was able to have a chat with Mr Sakaki and learn just what I’d gotten myself into!
In the hour or so we chatted for I discovered a number of very useful things:
1. It turns out that the “starting at 5 o clock thing” was a test to see if I really wanted to come to Japan! I still have to work 6 days a week and there will be the odd period of 5 o clock starts.
2. Mr Sakaki doesn’t actually require my services all the time and has allowed me to take much more Holiday off than is usual. There is a very busy period from now until August after that I am allowed to take as much as 6 weeks off!
3. Mr Sakaki has a “family saloon, which I can’t drive, a small truck which I can’t drive, a small box car which I can’t drive and a Toyota ‘town ace’ truck which I CAN drive“… Bonus! As a result of this my work duties will include delivering the eggplants from about 3 sites to the main office in the van… Its like working at Baldwins all over again!
They are the 3 main points of interest (for me anyway) but other things mentioned were respective families, cameras (Mr Sakaki has taken 12'335 pictures of me already), my Philipino workmates, world war 2(he brought it up not me), The English Hierarchy (Mr Sakaki thought I was a Duke!!!) and food.

Matthew,
Great to hear that you are safe and well and really enjoying it. It sounds fantastic, particularly the bit about the truck and the working hours / holiday. Do send an email when you get are online.
